The Lord Reveals What is Better to the Younger. #GunReformNow
St. Benedict says, “the Lord often reveals what is better to the younger” (RB 3:3). He is right. Here’s a re-consideration of parts of the Prologue of Benedict’s Rule:
Listen carefully, America, to the children’s instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart. This is advice from a God who loves you; welcome it, and faithfully put it into practice. The labor to protect lives by well-regulating and reforming gun laws will bring you back to your true identity as brave and free Americans. This message… is for you, then, if you are ready to give up your guns once and for all, and armed with the strong and noble weapons of active love to do battle on behalf of the children who are being murdered in schools, the moviegoers being murdered in theaters, the concert-goers being murdered in Las Vegas, the worshippers being murdered in churches, softball playing Republicans on a field, constituent greeting Representative in a parking lot, the victims of suicide in every community— the 96 Americans killed by guns on an average day….
Here are just some of the instructions of the surviving children from the school shooting in Parkland, Florida:
Emma Gonzalez: “If the President wants to come up to me and tell me to my face that it was a terrible tragedy and how it should never have happened and maintain telling us how nothing is going to be done about it, I’m going to happily ask him how much money he received from the National Rifle Association. You want to know something? It doesn’t matter because I already know. Thirty million dollars. And divided by the number of gunshot victims in the United States in the one and one-half months in 2018 alone, that comes out to being $5,800. Is that how much these people are worth to you, Trump? If you don’t do anything to prevent this from continuing to occur, that number of gunshot victims will go up and the number that they are worth will go down. And we will be worthless to you. To every politician who is taking donations from the NRA, shame on you."
Alfonso Calderon: “…the NRA can only do so much. We are the people of America. We the people are the ones who change this country. We the people are the ones this country is made for and run for. We the people elect who they pay to stay in office. They need to remember that. Because they can fight now. They'll fight for years. But change will come.”
Cameron Kasky: “People are saying that it’s not time to talk about gun control, and we can respect that. Here’s the time: March 24. In every single city, we are going to be marching together as students begging for our lives. This isn’t about the GOP. This isn’t about the Democrats. This is about the adults. We feel neglected. At this point, you’re either with us or you’re against us.” (On ABC’s “This Week.”)
Benedict continues: Let us get up then, at long last for the Scriptures rouse us when they say, “It is high time for us to arise from sleep,” (Rom 13:11). Let us open our eyes to the light that comes from God, and our ears to the voice from heaven that every day calls out this charge, “If you hear His voice today, do not harden your hearts,” (Ps 94 :8)... “Run while you have the light of life, that the darkness of death may not overtake you.” (John 12:35)… “turn away from evil and do good; let peace be your quest and aim,” (Ps 33:14-15)…the Lord waits for us daily to translate into action, as we should, His holy teachings. Therefore our life span has been lengthened by way of a truce, that we may amend our misdeeds…
How do we amend our misdeeds? By taking real action to protect the lives of vulnerable people by sensible gun reform we can be our true selves once again—our hearts overflowing with the inexpressible delight of love.
This is simple:
1) Listen to the survivors’ instructions.
2) Attend to what you hear with the ear of your heart.
3) Faithfully put their advice into practice.
